Młody student Yagami Raito jest rozgoryczony otaczającym go światem, wszędzie przemoc, korupcja, zło. Pewnego dnia znajduje Dziennik Śmierci, należący do Shinigami - Boga Śmierci, wynika z niego, że osoba której imię wpisze się na karty tej książki błyskawicznie zginie. Bohater początkowo traktuje to jako głupi kawał. Dowiedziawszy się, że jest to prawda, postanawia za pomocą Dziennika stworzyć świat bez przestępców. Kiedy kryminaliści zaczynają ginąć jeden, po drugim władze wysyłają legendarnego detektywa L, aby wytropił zabójcę.
