Anthoine de Bertrand: Amours de Ronsard
"Ronsard is the central poet of the French Renaissance. His main characteristics are to have a very rich language and to use a lot of images to illustrate his ideas. His works were used by a great variety of composers.
The realization made by de Bertrand is one of the most achieved, in the art of underlying the text and its ideas with music. One perfect example is the last track of this disc, beginning slowly and softly (word "doux" - soft), and ending with waves of sounds and rhythms (words "Montagnes and plaines" - mountains and plains).
Always the music respects the scansion of the text, thanks to a great variety of rhythms and tempi."

Sequentia Ensemble - Edda - Myths of Medieval Iceland

EAC FLAC | NO LOG | Scans | 339 MB

Barbara Thornton (died 1999) and Benjamin Bagby, leading directors of the international

vocal ensemble Sequentia, are not marked as composers. Yet, their achievement on this very

special disc ranks them among the very best of composers for vocal music in the 20th

    Century.

The Icelandic Edda, originally sung rather than told, inspired these great Early Music

singers/scholars/musicologists to explore the musical development in an isolated and remote

    part of Europe.
This disc has been an ordeal for the Ensemble. It required years of studying scraps of ever

so slight musical evidence (usually notated in neumen); the ways of ancient Icelandic lore,

and the study of Old Norse, which resembles modern-day Icelandic. The ensemble even hired

university professors to teach them the pronunciation of the old texts.

You’ll hear a merciless drone of singing and singing here….it goes on and on, inducing a

trance leading you to the essentials of life and death. For this is what the Edda is about –

the loss of love and life, the destruction of a world.

One of my top five favourites, is what I said. I try to lean back and not let the intensity

of this album get to my throat too much, or the tears will spring from my eyes like a

    fountain.

Barbara Thornton (the slightly hoarse alto) died from cancer shortly after the final

production stage of this album. I consider track 7 to be a last expression of love between

her and her Sequentia partner Benjamin Bagby.

Again: the music is a reconstruction, and involved a lot of speculation as to how the music

would have sounded in medieval times. It does not matter if the Sequentia Ensemble managed

to be authentic here; even if it wouldn’t resemble original Icelandic music at all, this

album still stands as a great composition in itself.

BONUM VINUM – Wine Songs and Dances from 16th-19th century Hungary – Musica Historica

EAC FLAC | NO LOG | Scans | 246 MB

    "Wine, wine, wine,
    There is no wine
    Like Hungarian wine.

    It empties our purses but
    Keeps us in good spirits
    God bless our country
And keep all of us safe

    There is no wine
    Like Hungarian wine"

    DESCRIPTION
    Spoiler:

The objective of this album is to make the audience appreciate the taste of good wine and feel the euphoria of abundance and freedom. Some songs also make fun of drunkards with harsh words and wry irony.
The first song tells us about the biblical role of wine (the wedding of Cana).
From the Middle Ages it is almost certain that everyday enjoyment of wine used to be accompanied by singing. Popular poetry preserved several motifs that had been composed by students.
The most notable of these is part of a lighthearted confession of the 12th century. It is the testament of a drunkard who would like a barrel for his coffin since he wants to drink even in his grave.
In the Renaissance royal courts of King Mathias Hunyadi and the Jagello Kings poliphonic works brought a taste of Western music (5).
Sebestyén Tinódi, one of the most proliferic poets of the 16th century composed a song in Transylvania about the lousy, watered wine that was served to him (4).
The most important poet of the Renaissance period was Bálint Balassi. He wrote a spring welcoming song, where he mentions the knights who drink wine, one glass after the other and in their good spirits do not look into the unknown future (6).
From the 17th century 3 songs are presented. One was written by István Miskolczi Csulyak, who lived most of his life around Tokaj, the famous wine-region (9).
Special mention has to be made of the third song (12) that used to be sung during the Lent. It is about the battle of Bacchus and Mars (Carnival and Lent).
Bacchus is riding valiantly on top of a goat and his army is made of rich meals of meat and cabbage, whereas in the strict army of Lent we find fat-free fish and bean-like vegetables. Unfortunately for Bacchus, he loses the battle and becomes hostage to the land of Lent (Jejumium).
From the 2nd half of the 17th century the memory of the inter-ethnical musical language (Hungarian-Slovak-Polish-German) is evoked on the one hand by the so-called chorea-like dances (7, 11). On the other hand you can hear a hat dance (10) that carries the stylistic features of 16th century hajdú dances (hajdús were soldiers in the Hungarian army).
The beginning of the 18th century preserved a few Bagpipe tunes (3) for us. In the Apponyi Manuscript from 1730 we inherited some table songs sung at the time of feasts of high nobility.
The 18th century brought a new perspective. The happy moments of Hungarian students, who openly took pleasure from wordly joys are presented in 2 songs, also called the ABC songs (14, 18/e), due to the fact that each paragraph starts with a subsequent letter of the alphabet and the verse is built around that letter.
”Tus” (toast) poems and songs serving the purpose of celebrating someone on a special occasion are also presented in a toast series taken from chapbooks from the 18-19th centuries (18).
The so-called verbunkos is a very important East European style. On the album there is a series from the collection of Imre Zugrits (19).
The Song to the Wine Cellar (21) was sung as a parody at folk weddings.
As you can see from the above information, East European music cannot be imagined without the knowledge of folk music traditions. Research is the task of musicologists, but the preservation of traditions is also actively undertaken by musicians.
