Kurosaki Ichigo ma 15 lat i posiada niezywkłą zdolność widzenia duchów zmarłych ludzi. Pewnego dnia w mieście pojawia się demon, którego nikt poza Ichigo nie widzi. Za demonem podąża tajemnicza dziewczyna, która w końcu zabija demona, a wieczorem zjawia się w domu Ichigo. Rukia przedstawia siebie jako boga Śmierci (Death god), którego zadaniem jest zabijanie demonów i doprowadzanie zmarłych dusz do nieba zwanego Soul society. Demony, które pojawiają się w mieście, zdają się szukać właśnie Ichigo, ponieważ jego dusza jest dla nich wyjątkowym łupem - on widzi to, czego nie widzi nikt inny: ich samych i boga Śmierci. Aby chronić swoją rodzinę Ichigo musi zostać bogiem Śmierci. Rukia oddaje mu swoją moc i osłabiona przybiera ciało ziemskiej dziewczynki, na czas, kiedy będzie odzyskiwać siły. Ichigo ma wątpliwości czy potrafi służyć wszystkim ludziom i chronić przed demonami nie tylko swoją rodzinę, ale też każdego, kto tylko będzie tego potrzebował.
