Borderlands to strzelanka FPP stworzona przez firmę Gearbox Software, znaną między innymi dzięki serii Brothers in Arms. Tym razem deweloperzy postanowili jednak zrezygnować z wydarzeń historycznych i przygotować grę, której akcja rozgrywa się w przyszłości.
Borderlands przedstawia nam postapokaliptyczny świat, przypominający swoim charakterem słynną trylogię Mad Max.
Gracz zostaje wrzucony do tego niezwykłego uniwersum i zmuszony jest szukać sposobów na przeżycie. Choć gra jest strzelanką zawiera elementy typowe dla tytułów z gatunku RPG. Mamy bowiem do czynienia z modyfikacją głównej postaci, losowo generowanymi poziomami oraz zdobywaniem dodatkowych umiejętności. Z początkowego cieniasa stajemy się powoli prawdziwą maszyną do zabijania, z którą nikt nie będzie miał szans na zwycięstwo.
Prócz modyfikacji postaci głównego bohatera, Borderlands pozwala także na dostosowywanie pojazdów oraz dostępnego w grze uzbrojenia. W zasadzie każdy posiadany element można dopasować wedle własnych upodobań. System ten wraz z losowym generowaniem poziomów zapewnia mnóstwo godzin dobrej zabawy i świeże doznania z każdym podejściem do gry.
Borderlands oferuje nie tylko rozbudowany tryb fabularny, lecz również zabawę wieloosobową. Gracze walczący w multiplayer mogą działać wspólnie, lub przeciwko sobie.
Grafika w Borderlands generowana jest przez nowoczesny silnik graficzny w pełni wykorzystujący możliwości nowoczesnych komputerów PC oraz konsol Xbox 360 i PS3.

Borderlands łączy w sobie charakterystyczne cechy dwóch gatunków: FPS oraz cRPG. Rozgrywającą się w bliżej nieokreślonej przyszłości akcję obserwujemy z perspektywy pierwszej osoby i używając wielu rodzajów broni eliminujemy duże grupy przeciwników, jednocześnie rozwijając swoją postać i dobierając jej sprzęt. Za przygotowanie tej produkcji odpowiedzialna jest doskonale znana graczom firma Gearbox Software, która zasłynęła głównie dzięki hitowej serii taktycznych strzelanin Brothers in Arms.

Mamy do czynienia z postapokaliptyczną scenerią, a całość w bardzo wyraźny sposób nawiązuje więc do filmowej trylogii Mad Max. Na skolonizowanej przez ludzi planecie Pandora rezydują potężne bestie. Gracze wcielają się w jednego z trójki najemników i przyjmują od mieszkańców kolejne zadania, w większości polegające na eliminacji wrogów. Bardzo duży nacisk położono na szerokie możliwości dostosowywania głównej postaci do własnych potrzeb oraz obecność losowo generowanych plansz, co budzi skojarzenia z licznymi naśladowcami kultowego Diablo. Same gatunki broni można dowolnie modyfikować, a ich łączna liczba to około pięć tysięcy. Dzięki temu każdy może grać w swoim stylu: jedni z naciskiem na brawurę, inni jako snajperzy chowający się po kątach. Dużą rolę odgrywają też pojazdy, za kierownicami których możemy zasiadać. Wehikuły te również należy sukcesywnie upgrade’ować.

W miarę upływu czasu gry postać staje się coraz silniejsza i pozyskuje nowe umiejętności. Oprócz kampanii dla pojedynczego gracza duży nacisk położono także na multiplayer. Do zabawy w kooperacji mogą przystąpić maksymalnie cztery osoby. Ponadto przewidziano możliwość dowolnego wchodzenia lub opuszczania aktualnie przeprowadzanych rozgrywek. Jeden z graczy zaczyna, a pozostali dołączają do hostowanej przez niego gry, ale ze zdobytymi łupami i rozwiniętymi postaciami. W grze jednoosobowej ich rolę przejmą NPC-e: wspomagają nas w trudniejszych momentach, a w poszczególnych misjach trzeba wybrać ich specjalizację i wydawać proste komendy. Można im także zmieniać broń i decydować o drodze rozwoju
