Conviction to piąta odsłona cyklu gier akcji Splinter Cell, firmowanego przez nazwisko słynnego pisarza Toma Clancy’ego. Produkt przygotowany przez oddział koncernu Ubisoft zlokalizowany w Montrealu, znacznie odbiega od swoich poprzedników pod względem koncepcji.

Fabuła nowej gry koncentruje się wokół Anny Grimsdottir, szefowej grupy programistów, pracującej dla organizacji Third Echelon. Gdy Sam Fisher dowiaduje się o grożącym kobiecie niebezpieczeństwie, postanawia jej pomóc. W tym celu nawiązuje kontakt ze swoim poprzednim pracodawcą, wstępuje w szeregi agencji i rozpoczyna wykonywanie zlecanych przez nią misji. Niestety, organizacji tej daleko do formy sprzed lat, o czym nasz bohater przekonuje się, gdy w pierwszym zadaniu otrzymuje złe informacje oraz sprzęt. Niedługo potem Fisher odkrywa, że to właśnie Third Echelon stanowi największe zagrożenie dla Anny. Agent odchodzi z firmy i już jako zbieg, postanawia działać na własną rękę.

Conviction jest produktem dla serii rewolucyjnym, gdyż zrywa z typową dla tzw. skradanek koncepcją krycia się w mroku i cichej eksterminacji przeciwników. Tym razem Fisher musi poruszać się w świetle dnia na otwartych przestrzeniach, nierzadko wśród ludzi. Zmiana środowiska nie oznacza jednak, że nasz bohater może swobodnie poruszać się po ulicach. Gracz musi tak kierować postacią Sama, aby nie zwracać uwagi wśród patrolujących teren policjantów oraz zwykłych przechodniów. Wmieszanie się w tłum zwykle załatwia sprawę, choć czasem trzeba uciec się do mocniejszych argumentów w postaci wywołania paniki. Wówczas, wykorzystując chaos, łatwiej oddalić się z zagrożonego miejsca.

Niezwykle istotną rolę w Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction pełni otoczenie. Gracz może używać całej masy przedmiotów do walki z przeciwnikami, włączając w to krzesła, skrzynie, stojące na biurkach monitory, itp. Dynamiczny system walki oraz wysoka inteligencja bohaterów sterowanych przez komputer (wrogowie cały czas starają się uzyskać przewagę nad Fisherem) sprawia, że potyczki nabierają zupełnie nowego charakteru i w niczym nie przypominają poprzednich odsłon cyklu.

Conviction zawiera także tryb rozgrywki co-operative, w którym pod kontrolę graczy oddanych zostało dwóch agentów do zadań specjalnych - Amerykanin imieniem Archer i jego rosyjski kompan, Kestrel. Obaj panowie mają do wykonania zestaw misji, składających się na blisko pięciogodzinne wprowadzenie do właściwych przygód Sama Fishera.
