Prince of Persia: Zapomniane Piaski to kolejna opowieść o nieustraszonym Księciu Persji. Produkcja stanowi powrót do rozwiązań znanych z trylogii: Piaski Czasu, Dusza Wojownika oraz Dwa Trony, wydawanej w latach 2003-2005. Fabularnie Zapomniane Piaski uzupełniają siedmioletnią, nieznaną lukę w historii Księcia Persji, czyli okres pomiędzy Piaskami Czasu oraz Duszą Wojownika. Dają nam zatem odpowiedź na istotne pytanie: jakie wydarzenia wpłynęły na drastyczną i mroczną przemianę księcia?

Gra rozpoczyna się tuż po wydarzeniach znanych z Piasków Czasu. W czasie wyczerpującej podróży po regionie Azad Książę Persji postanawia zatrzymać się na moment w królestwie swego brata. Nieoczekiwanie dostrzega potężną armię szturmującą centralny pałac. Nie namyślając się zbyt długo postanawia jeszcze raz skorzystać z mocy Piasków Czasu i uratować królestwo przed totalną anihilacją. Decyzja ta jest zarazem początkiem kolejnej wielkiej przygody.

Mechanika rozgrywki w dużym stopniu przypomina system znany z Piasków Czasu i Duszy Wojownika. Zabawa jest zatem podzielona na dwa główne elementy – widowiskową walkę z przeciwnikami, a także spektakularne pokonywanie lokacji zaprojektowanych przez artystów z Ubisoft. Do łask powraca tu kontrola Piasków Czasu, zapewniająca Księciu Persji pewnego rodzaju nieśmiertelność. Przed zejściem z tego świata chroni go bowiem możliwość cofnięcia czasu. W Zapomnianych Piaskach książę jest dodatkowo w stanie nadzorować siły natury i wykorzystywać je do własnych celów (np. podczas walk lub rozwiązywania zagadek środowiskowych).
