Need for Speed ProStreet to kolejna odsłona najpopularniejszej na świecie serii zręcznościowych wyścigów opatrzonych logiem koncernu Electronic Arts. W odróżnieniu od swego poprzednika, Carbona, opisywana część znanej sagi całkowicie zrywa z ideą nocnych, nielegalnych wyścigów, a jej akcja - dla wywołania kontrowersji wśród graczy - przenosi się wreszcie na profesjonalne, zamknięte tory.

Zgodnie z pomysłem nadania NFS-owi nowego charakteru programiści skupili się m.in. na dokładnym przedstawieniu uszkodzeń prowadzonych przez nas wozów. Dzięki pomocy fizyków pracujących na co dzień na uniwersytecie w Vancouver autorzy projektu szczegółowo odtworzyli efekty kolizji z innymi samochodami oraz nieruchomymi elementami otoczenia. Dane jest nam zatem oglądać porozbijane szyby, wgniecione maski, zderzaki, spojlery i inne fragmenty pojazdów, które po zakończeniu wyścigów mogą pełnić rolę odznak – pamiątek po emocjonujących zawodach. Uszkodzenia, jakich dorobiliśmy się w trakcie potyczek z rywalami, mają nie tylko ujemny wpływ na wygląd naszego wozu, ale także na jego wydajność. Należy jednakże od razu zaznaczyć, że do całkowitego zdezelowania gabloty potrzeba nieco więcej aniżeli kilka muśnięć o karoserię innego auta.

Deweloperzy położyli równie duży nacisk na opcję Autosculpt, za pomocą której możemy zmieniać rzeźbę oraz osiągi swego cacka. Modyfikując poszczególne cechy samochodu wpływamy na takie szczegóły jak chłodzenie silnika, obieg powietrza, prędkość maksymalna, waga, konfiguracja przełożeń skrzyni biegów czy przyspieszenie. Efekty dokonanych zmian dane jest nam sprawdzić w specjalnym tunelu aerodynamicznym, a jeżeli stwierdzimy, że naszemu pojazdowi przydałaby jakaś unikatowa część, możemy zainwestować w któryś z ponad 1000 elementów, decydujących o wewnętrznych walorach naszego samochodu. Wszystkie one pochodzą od firm, które obecne są na rynku w rzeczywistości.

Porównując ProStreet do realnego świata należy wspomnieć również o dziesiątkach licencjonowanych wozów, reprezentujących 26 marek (m.in. Honda, BMW, Zonda oraz Audi), jakie brylowały w oficjalnych wyścigach samochodowych w ciągu ostatnich 40 lat. Wehikuły te przeznaczone są do jazdy w czterech trybach rozgrywki. Pierwszy z nich to zmagania na asfaltowym torze w gronie kilku innych zawodników, których auta umyślnie nie zostały podzielone na klasy, aby uczynić wyścig bardziej żywiołowym, pozbawionym sztywnych zasad. Pozostałe trzy opcje to znane już z wcześniejszych odsłon sagi NFS Drift oraz Drag, a także opcja Speed Challenge, w której musimy popisać się uzyskaniem jak najwyższej prędkości.

Choć zrezygnowano z zaserwowania nam możliwości swobodnej jazdy po mieście, nadal jest o co walczyć. Nagrodami za zwyciężanie w odbywających się co weekend konkurencjach są bowiem dodatkowe maszyny oraz szacunek społeczności graczy ProStreet. Nie zapomniano ponadto o entuzjastach gry wieloosobowej oraz osobach, które pragną skosztować namiastki symulacji. To właśnie dla nich przewidziano możliwość wyłączenia wszelkich ułatwień typu: wspomaganie kierownicy, ABS, dzięki czemu mogą sprawdzić oni na własnej skórze, czy Need for Speed powinien być kojarzony nadal tylko i wyłącznie ze zręcznościowym stylem jazdy.
