Historia wiktoriańskiej rodziny Forsyte'ów, która należy do bogatej burżuazji. Losy kilku pokoleń rodziny, perypetie, a także miłostki młodych ludzi uwikłanych w różne problemy i w sieć rodzinnych tajemnic. Młody Jolyon zakochuje się w pięknej guwernantce jego córki. Zostawia więc rodzinę, aby szukać szczęścia w ramionach Helen i z nią wiedzie skromne, ale szczęśliwe życie. Kuzyn Jolyona - Soames, aby zapewnić ciągłość nazwisku Forsyte musi znaleźć żonę, która urodzi mu syna. Zakochuje się w Irene Heron - młodej dziewczynie, która właśnie straciła ojca i aby zapewnić sobie byt, musi dobrze wyjść za mąż. Jednak nie kocha Soamesa i wkrótce pragnie sie z nim rozstać, co spotyka się nie tylko ze stanowczym sprzeciwem męża, ale też całej rodziny...
