XXIII wiek. Federacja Zjednoczonych Planet pragnąc rozszerzyć swoją wiedzę i wpływy wysyła w trzyletnią podróż statek NCC 1701 U.S.S. Enterprise, pod dowództwem młodego Kapitana Jamesa T. Kirka. W swojej misji odwiedzają nowe, nieznane światy i spotykają obce cywilizacje. Śmiało wkraczają tam gdzie nie dotarł jeszcze żaden człowiek . Serial ten to klasyka Science Fiction. Dał początek wielu innym serialom i kilku filmom kinowym. Wizjonerskie podejście Gene'a Roddenberry'ego urzekło nie tylko publiczność, ale i fizyków. Star Trek, wraz z dalszymi ciągami, cechowało silne podejście do nauki. Co prawda nie uniknięto błędów ale Star Trek ma swój wpływ na środowisko naukowe.
