"The Outer Limits" to serial fantastyczny produkcji USA, pokazywany w amerykańskiej telewizji w latach 1995-2002. W tym czasie powstało ponad 150 odcinków, podzielone na siedem sezonów. Każdy odcinek tworzy odrębną całość i nie jest w żaden sposób powiązany z resztą (choć można znaleźć parę wyjątków) . W związku z powyższym serial ten nie ma swoich bohaterów, albowiem ci zmieniają się z odcinka na odcinek (i dzięki temu mogliśmy już podziwiać zagładę naszej pięknej planety w kilku różnych wariantach).
Akcja serialu najczęściej toczy się w czasach współczesnych lub mniej (częściej) albo bardziej (rzadziej) odległej przyszłości. Miejsca bywają bardzo różne, choć oczywiście najczęściej jest to Ziemia. Stałymi gośćmi serialu są przybysze z obcych planet, regularnie odwiedzający naszą planetę, niekoniecznie w złych zamiarach. To właśnie ta różnorodność jest mocną stroną TOL: mimo iż serial ten porusza raczej mroczne klimaty, to można znaleźć w nim odcinki o optymistycznym zakończeniu. Fakt, że za stworzeniem poszczególnych odcinków stoją zupełnie inni ludzie (różni scenarzyści i reżyserzy) powoduje, że TOL może zaskoczyć nawet starych wyjadaczy, którzy widzieli już dziesiątki odcinków.
Dzięki naszej publicznej telewizji "The Outer Limits" mogli poznać i polubić również widzowie w Polsce. Ten fantastyczny serial był emitowany w pierwszym programie TVP pod wdzięcznym tytułem "Po tamtej stronie". Serial był niestety pokazywany późno w nocy (z reguły około godziny drugiej) z soboty na niedzielę (część była też z piątku na sobotę), po dwa odcinki "za jednym zamachem". Ta pora emisji na pewno mocno uszczupliła grono potencjalnych widzów, ale i tak "The Outer Limits" zyskał w Polsce wielu zwolenników.
