NHL 09 to kolejna odsłona jednego z wydawanych przez Electronic Arts cyklów gier sportowych, w tym wypadku, jak sama nazwa wskazuje, poświęconego hokejowi na lodzie, a dokładniej północnoamerykańskiej profesjonalnej lidze NHL. Podobnie jak w przypadku innych sportowych serii autorstwa EA, także i ta co roku ukazuje się w ulepszonej formie.
W tej części, poza zaktualizowanymi składami drużyn NHL i AHL (liga rozwojowa dla NHL) oraz dopracowanym, znanym już z poprzedniej edycji, systemem Skill Stick (od teraz nasi zawodnicy mogą także wykonywać zagrania trzymając kij w jednej ręce), pojawiły się także niewystępujące dotąd w serii elementy. Najważniejszym z nich jest nowy tryb rozgrywki - Be a Pro, w którym tworzymy własnego hokeistę i prowadzimy go przez kolejne etapy sportowej kariery, rozpoczynając w jednej z drużyn American Hockey League, a kończąc jako legenda NHL. Ważne jest też, że już na samym początku musimy określić rolę, jaką będzie on pełnił w zespole - przy tym wybór, jakiego dokonamy wpływa na oczekiwania trenera względem naszego zawodnika. W końcu czego innego należy się spodziewać po obrońcy, a czego innego po napastniku.
